F108: Adaptive Equipment

New and emerging technology and adaptive equipment are available for people with various kinds of disabilities. These adaptations and assistive devices make it easier for people with disabilities to live in safe and comfortable surroundings, to control their environment, and to maximize their independence. Activities of daily living, the ability to communicate, and mobility are facilitated and quality of life is enhanced with the use of the adaptive equipment described in this module.


Learning Outcomes

After completing this module, you should be able to do the following:

  1. Describe various types of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).
  2. Discuss strategies for enhancing communication with AAC users and for helping people develop communication skills.
  3. Discuss how visual communication aids and skills can be beneficial for individuals with disabilities.
  4. Identify various types of mobility aids, including body alignment devices, and describe their proper use.
  5. Describe various kinds of adaptive clothing and footwear, tableware and utensils, and food preparation aids.
  6. Describe the use and care of prosthetic devices, such as dentures, splints and brace
