F109: Universal Precautions and Infection Control

Universal Precautions are basic routine practices designed to prevent transmission of disease. Universal Precautions are based on the assumption that all blood and certain body fluids are potentially infectious. Staff must use these routine practices at all times to greatly reduce health risks associated with exposure to blood or body fluids.


Learning Outcomes

After completing this module, you will be able to do the following:

  1. Identify causes of infections and describe how infections are spread.
  2. Describe and demonstrate the following basic routine practices of Universal Precautions:
    • effective hand washing
    • appropriate use of gloves, masks, gowns, and eye protection
    • use of correct procedures when using, cleaning, or disposing of health care equipment, including needles
    • use of correct procedures when cleaning environmental surfaces
  3. Identify the causes and symptoms of the following diseases, and describe how they are spread: Hepatitis A, B, and C; HIV/AIDS.
  4. Describe how you can protect yourself, your co-workers, and the individuals you support from infection.
  5. Discuss self-care to prevent infection in the workplace.
